Continuous Printing

Continuous Printout

This function allows any WaveView window to print continuously to an Epson compatible printer. Only one WaveView window can be selected as continuous source at any one time.

To Switch this facility on and off, select the ‘continuous print’ option in the drop-down menu in the button. If the option is not available, another window is currently selected for continuous print.

The streams printed, time and amplitude scale, offset and Mux scaling settings are all taken from the selected WaveView window. This allows a WYSIWYG type result, and easily selectable print parameters.

Hint: To display and examine the printed streams in a different scale than desired for printing, simply use two WaveView windows: one as the print source, the second for display manipulation. The printing source window can be minimised, and printing will continue in the background.

Since the MS-Windows printing system is page-based, no driver support is provided for continuous output. Therefore Scream! bypasses the printer drivers, and sends data directly to the printer. For this reason, only Epson ESC/p compatible printers are supported for this feature. Also, printer setup is left to the user. See Print Setup Options. An MS-Windows printer driver is NOT necessary for continuous printout.

Note: The Standard WaveView print facility uses the MS-Windows drivers, and will therefore work for any Windows 95/NT installed printer.

Dots Per Inch (DPI), Sample Rate and Printed Inches

The time scaling uses the same method as the display - a scale of "1" will print 1 line per second, 2 = two lines per second, etc. Therefore at a scale of 1 on a 60 DPI printer, an inch will be printed every 60 seconds, or 1 minute. At 360 DPI one inch of print would represent 360 seconds, or 6 minutes. The DPI should be considered when choosing a Time scale in the WaveView window for printing.

Port Capturing

Windows supports printer port-capturing, where an ‘LPT’ device can be directed to a remote printer on a network. This facility can be used to enable continuous printout to a printer on the network. See the printer options in the Windows Control Panel for printer port capturing. Note that care should be taken to avoid printing other documents during continuous printout. Port redirection can also be controlled from the DOS command line, using the "net use" command. Type "net help" for more information.
